It doesn’t matter whether you are recruiting for new employees, apprentices or subcontractors, it is a difficult and time consuming task to find the right resources, and the process can often be quite disruptive to your business. Recruitment is hard work.
Here are five things that can improve your chances of finding the right resources.
- Be specific – To attract the right people you need to clearly define what you want and what you don’t want. People often recruit for a generic role to attract a broader audience but all they end up with is a heap of people that are not suitable for the role, which is a big time waster. By writing a detailed list of what you specifically want the new resource to be and then using this as a checklist to advertise and recruit you are more likely to end up with quality, rather than quantity in your applicant pool.
- Use the right channels to communication – It is important to identify the channels that your potential applicants would use, rather than the ones you would use. For example if you are looking for an apprentice then Facebook is ideal, but if you are looking for someone with some more experience then gumtree, local newspapers or referrals is more likely to get you the right candidate.
- Get other people working for you – extend the pool of potential candidates by getting other people working for you. Tell your network that you are looking and ask them to look for you. You can also speak to agencies that have databases of clients and that will identify candidates at no charge to yourself.
- Use social media – post your positions on your social media (Facebook twitter, LinkedIn), on online recruitment sites, social media job boards and your website. This allows your network (and their network) to pass it on easily to people who might be good potential candidates.
- Streamline your process – by having a system in place to handle the enquiries and applicants, means that it doesn’t take too long, you are still finding the right candidate and helps you manage your time. For example, get potential applicants to send through an email and organise to review and call back at a set time each evening.
Finding the right person is a challenging process, but it is far easier to manage the challenge at this end of the process than the aftermath of an unsuitable employee.
